Richland, GA- Mary Frances Smith Dunn, "Mema", of Red Hill, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Saturday morning, November 18, 2017 in Richland, GA. She was born to Nettie Mae Alberson and Johnnie Lee Smith of Troup County, GA on March 21, 1921 in Harris County.
Mary Frances married Rupert Cyril Dunn of Chipley, GA in 1938 and relocated to Richland in Stewart County, GA. She had identical twin daughters on August 27, 1938 in a one-roomed farmhouse, Nanette Dunn Wadsworth Price, currently of Richland, GA; and Wynette Dunn Johnson Mase, currently of St. Marys, OH. Mary Frances has eight surviving grandchildren: Gloria Peele of Griffin, GA; Stacey Dowd of McDonough, GA; Donna Wadsworth Quam of Decatur, GA; Robert Wadsworth of Athens, GA; Kim Barnes of McDonough, GA; Pamela Johnson Rammel of St. Marys, OH; Donald Johnson of Louisville, KY; and Derick Johnson of St. Marys, OH. Additionally, "Mema Frances" is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great grandchildren, with one more on the way.
She is survived by 1 nephew, 3 nieces and a sister-in-law Ennis Walter.
Mary Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert, who passed away in December of 1958.
Mary Frances was very active in the Richland community including Richland First Baptist Church where she taught youth Sunday School, sang in the choir and lead the GAs. Mary Frances enjoyed serving others by working as an LPN at Stewart-Webster Hospital where her daughters' love of nursing was fostered. In 1950 she became a dental hygienist for the US Army where for over 30 years she served at Ft. Benning in Columbus and Ft. McPherson in Atlanta. She returned to Richland to work in the Stewart County Dental Clinic where she joyfully served until finally retiring at the age of 80.
In her later years, she enjoyed her many square dancing friends traveling all over Georgia participating in dances and competitions with the Fountain City Twirlers. She also enjoyed her time visiting with her many friends and family.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Dunn's life will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in Edgewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, 31907. Interment will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Richland, GA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Dunn to Kindred Hospice, 100 Brookstone Centre Pkwy, Columbus, GA, 31904.
