Martha Jean Henry, 89, died on September 11, 2015 at her home in Columbus, Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Henry was born on March 14, 1926 in Lafayette, Georgia to Julius Robert McCurdy and Carrie Hale McCurdy. She lived with her eight brothers and sisters on the family farm south of Lafayette. She attended local schools and was of a graduate of Lafayette High School.
After attending West Georgia College, Mrs. Henry worked in Atlanta then returned home to Lafayette. She married Charles A. Henry in 1948 and lived on the Henry farm in Rock Springs, Georgia where they started a family. The family moved to Columbus, Georgia in 1955 where Mrs. Henry lived and raised her two sons. Mrs. Henry was a wonderful homemaker who loved to cook and take care of her family. She had a passion for flowers and maintaining a beautiful home. She loved to travel and with her husband Charles, visited many countries around the world.
Throughout her life Mrs. Henry kept in close contact with her brothers and sisters. She took great joy in visiting the family home place as well as attending family reunions.
Mrs. Henry was a member of the St. Luke Methodist Church where she was active in the Shaw Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Henry is survived by her two sons, Charles Steven Henry and his wife Janice of Columbus; and John Patrick Henry and his wife Catherine of Atlanta; a grandson, Jonathan Reed Henry of Atlanta; a brother, William O. McCurdy and his wife Nelda of Rossville, Georgia; two sisters, Annelle Ledbetter of Marion, North Carolina and Carolyn Vanderver of Lady Lake, Florida; and a brother-in-law, Dr. J. William Henry of Corpus Christie, Texas.
