Joe Edward Harrell, 88, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away in his hometown of Columbus, GA on February 13, 2016. A Celebration of his Life will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Reverend Hal Brady officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall. A private family committal will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.
He was born March 30, 1927 in Columbus, GA and was the son of the late Carl and Annie Harrell. After graduating from Jordan High School, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. Upon his return he attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship. After college he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization. Joe was an avid golfer. His illustrious sports career was highlighted in his 2011 induction into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
Joe enjoyed a successful business career. He was the President of Royal Crown Bottling Company in Augusta, GA and President of Triple A Ice Company in Augusta. Joe was a consultant with Reddy Ice of Dallas in Columbus until his retirement.
He was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and past president of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and served on the Administrative Board. Joe was an avid supporter of his community. He was a member of Columbus Country Club and Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta, GA.
Joe is survived by the love of his life and best friend for 67 wonderful years, Lee Chambers Harrell of Columbus, GA; his daughters Patricia Harrell Branch (fiancé Andy Robinson) of Columbus, GA and Susan Harrell Scarborough (Chuck) of Columbus, GA; grandchildren Jason Brandon Branch (Cile), Lee Scarborough Jaynes, Charles Stephens Scarborough, Jr. (Rikki) and Mary Scarborough Gusmus (Michael); twelve precious great grandchildren Marianna, Swift, Broughton, Parks, Cason, Lillie, Charlie, Daniel, Otis, Jude, Ashford and Jones; special friend and nurse Anne Williams; many friends who he loved dearly; extended family; his special card and golf friends.
