MSG (Ret.) James Hugh Capps, originally from Madison County, North Carolina, passed away May 1, 2013 from heart failure after a long illness. Graveside services with full military honors will be held in Parkhill Cemetery at 3:00 PM, Monday, May 6, 2013 with Pastor Preston Parker officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus. The family will greet friends on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 – 5:00 PM.
MSG Capps was born May 12, 1925 in Madison County, NC to the late Oscar Capps and Bertha Arrowood Capps. He served his Lord, Jesus Christ as a devoted member of Victory Baptist Church in Columbus. He retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years of loyal service to his country. He was a decorated combat veteran of three wars: WWII, Korea and Vietnam. MSG Capps was awarded two Bronze Star medals, a Purple Heart medal and a number of Army Commendation medals.
Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Hazel Capps of Columbus, GA; four sons, Jim and Dianna Capps of Tucker, GA, Bob Capps of Jonesboro, GA, Bill and Martha Capps of Columbus, GA and Greg and Connie Capps of Raeford, NC; thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 6667 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
