Arrangements under the direction of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA.Horace Carlton Kirby, 86 of Columbus, GA went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House. The family will welcome guests for visitation one hour prior to Funeral Services at 11:00 am on Friday, November 11, 2016 in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA, followed by a private reception and Celebration of Mr. Kirby’s Life. Burial will be in Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Oglethorpe, GA. Reverend Mike Reeves will officiate.
Carlton was the eldest of ten children born to the late Horace Greely and Shellie Mae Kirby on April 12, 1930 in Emanuel County, GA. Carlton was an Army Veteran who received his Masters of Agriculture degree from Auburn University and retired from the State of Georgia as an Agronomist. He shared his knowledge and love of nature in a weekly article in the Ledger- Enquirer newspaper. Along with his duties with the state, Mr. Kirby was also known as Pastor Kirby to the congregation of River Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. Pastor Kirby was very talented and was a member of The Baldwin Blenders quartet while attending Auburn.
Along with his parents, Carlton was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 56 years, Frances Mathis Kirby; two brothers, James Gaston Kirby and Charles Victor Kirby; two sisters, Martha Ann Kirby Mason and Hazel Ruth Kirby Richard. Those left to cherish his memory are; one daughter, Jessica Carmen Kirby; one son, Stacey Carlton Kirby; five sisters, Margie Kirby Hall, Corine Kirby Gaffney, Mildred Lorea Kirby Davis, Helen Leigh Kirby English and Alma Lucille Kirby Mason; five grandchildren, Robert Cameron Wayne Cisneros, and four others, nieces, nephews, other family members, and many, many friends.
