Gwendolyn Faye Mallory Layne

Ms. Gwendolyn “Faye” Mallory Layne, age 79, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2022 in Acworth, Georgia. Born Gwendolyn Faye Mallory, on June 4, 1943, in Columbus, Georgia, one of six children and the youngest daughter, of the late Hugh Kayser Mallory and Thelma Webb Mallory. Also preceding her in death is James Hugh Mallory (Brother, 1989), Dorothy Yvonne Mallory Trimback Nichols (Sister, 1999), Sarah Frances Mallory Mularchyk (Sister, 2018) and Ronald Wayne Mallory (Brother, 2022). Ms. Layne is survived by two daughters, Kimberly (Craig) Layne McWilliams of Acworth, Georgia and Stephanie Faye Layne-Waddell (partner, Stuart W. Hall, Sr.) of Columbus, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jordan (Cameron) Lindsay Waddell Green of Saint Michael, MN. and Carter Layne McWilliams of Acworth, Georgia; Sister, Gloria June Mallory Floyd of Phenix City, Alabama. She is also survived by nieces/great nieces, nephews/great nephews and various cousins.

Viewing and Visitation for Family and Friends of Faye will be Friday, January 6, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at The Chapel of The Pines in Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907, followed by the Funeral service and graveside Committal Service. The service will be conducted by Reverend Stephanie Smith former pastor of Sherwood United Methodist Church, Columbus, Georgia and current Executive Pastor of Statesboro First United Methodist Church, Statesboro, Georgia.

Faye attended Jordan Vocational High School (Class of 1961) where she was involved in many school activities to include being a member of Company F of the ROTC at JVHS, she served as a Student Council Officer as well as Senior Class Treasurer. She was a member of the JVHS Varsity Cheerleading Squad where she served as Co-Captain. She was loved and adored by her fellow peers at JVHS where she was voted “Most Popular.” She was also chosen as Military Ball Queen of the 2nd Battle Group Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Within days of graduating high school, Faye began her employment with Southern Bell where she remained for quite some years followed by working an administrative position for a Colonel with the Civil Service where she received accolades and honors for her achievements and dedication. Following her time working in Civil Service, Faye worked as a Postal Carrier with the United States Postal Service where she was one of only a few female letter carriers. She eventually returned to Bell South to continue her career in Operator Services and Sales where she then retired after 25 years of service. Faye went on to work at AFLAC and TSYS following her retirement from AT&T.

Faye worked tirelessly to help provide for her two young daughters where she afforded them opportunities they otherwise may not have had. She was a fiercely devoted Mother full of love, support and pride for both of her children. Just as she loved and adored her two daughters, Faye did the same, if not more for her two beloved grandchildren. She attended every single dance production, dance competition, cheerleading events and performances, most every school activity, church plays/performances, out-of-town baseball and basketball games of her grandchildren whom she absolutely doted on and cherished. Her grandchildren were truly the apple of her eye and the joy of her heart. Most importantly she cherished the time she spent and the bond shared between them.

Faye attended Sherwood United Methodist Church, her church home, along with her two daughters, where she was a very active member. She was a member of the Sherwood UMC Church Council, Supervised and oversaw the Children’s Nursery and participated in many Christmas Cantatas. She enjoyed shopping, dining out and enjoying luncheons with the JVHS “Lunch Bunch”. In her latter years of leisure, she found enjoyment in watching Westerns and Crime Dramas such as “Blue Bloods” as well as “The Waltons”, “The Little House on The Prairie” and the “Heartland.” Faye also found great contentment talking on the telephone to her loved ones; she never was without a telephone either on her or right beside her. Faye was a very kind, caring, loving and generous Sweet Soul. Her outward beauty was no match to the beauty she possessed inside. To know her was to love her dearly.
