Evelyn Anna Wright went home to be with the Lord. She gracefully and peacefully slipped away at the home of her son and daughter-in-law with them by her side on, March 2, 2023. Evelyn was born June 28, 1936 to Bertha Lemke and William Chobot in New York City where she was the youngest of six siblings and three half-siblings.
She married Johnny Wright in 1955, a young Army Sgt whom she met while sweeping in front of the grocery store where she worked. Later that day he returned to buy dog food, for the dog he didn’t have, just so he could ask her out. Two years later they had their only child, John; this allowed Evelyn to accomplish what she wanted in life, to love and be loved and to have a family of her own. Being an Army wife allowed her to enjoy her other love, travel; she was able to see many of the 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska. The Army brought them to Columbus, Georgia where he retired and after his passing, she moved to Stockbridge to be near her son and grandchildren.
In 1971, at Columbus Area Vocational Technical School, Evelyn earned a Diploma as an Associate in Nurses Aide. She worked at The Medical Center and Doctors Hospital doing EEG’s. After Johnny’s retirement they purchased a flower shop called Old Towne Florist that they ran for numerous years. After Johnny’s health began to fail, they sold the shop and due to her love of working around people,
she worked in several retail shops including Penney’s where she earned high honors for sales. She also worked at Petite Sophisticate, Mori’s Luggage, and Casual Corner. Prior to her death she volunteered at the Helping in His Name Ministries and talked very passionately about the work they do to help those in need.
Evelyn is not only known for her beautiful floral arrangements but also the gorgeous wedding cakes she made for many young couples in Columbus. Her desire to create extended to painting and decorating for Christmas, her favorite holiday. She loved making candies and pies for people she cared about. She enjoyed traveling and she went on many cruises, and a trip through Europe.
Evelyn loved and is survived by her son, John (a Navy Veteran) and wife Terry Wright (also a Navy Veteran) , and seven Grandchildren: Donald Wright (a Navy Veteran), Robert and wife Amanda Wright, Michael and wife Bonnie Garner, Jennifer Garner, Leigh Anne and husband Jimmy Bortner (a Navy Veteran), Elizabeth and husband Rick Chappuis and the youngest Gordon Sullivan (an Air Force Veteran). She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren Landon Wright, Chace Garner, Julian Martin, Wyatt Hodge, Olivia Hodge, Rylee Garner, Evie Bortner, Mallory Wright, Gunner Wright, Ryker Wright, Mason Garner, Kane Chappuis and Karina Chappuis. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn is proceeded in death by her husband, Johnny, her parents and all of her siblings: Charles, Marian, Robert, Violet, Warren, Gustave, Mildred, William and Mable.
At her request, in her final wishes, there will only be a viewing, which will be at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, GA 31907 on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
