William Sykes

COLUMBIA – Memorial services for William L. “Bill” Sykes, 83, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Irmo/St.Andew’s Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.

Mr. Sykes was born and raised in Rogersville, TN and passed away on July 31, 2013 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the son of the late William Henderson Sykes and Gladys May Sykes. After serving in the U.S. Navy he joined E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. Upon retirement from DuPont he began a career in construction and development and spent twenty-eight years with Southern Development and Southern Development Management Co. until he retired in 2004.

Mr. Sykes is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Pat; daughters Suzanne (Richard) Chapman of Walterboro, SC, Michelle Ledbetter of Columbia; son, William L. (Sandy) Sykes, Jr. of Marietta, GA, Kenneth Ledbetter, Greenville, SC; grandsons, Jason (Lesi) Chapman of Walterboro, SC, Daniel Sykes of Marietta, GA and Ashby Ledbetter of Greensville, SC; two great granddaughters, Jennings and Whitney Chapman of Walterboro, SC. He is survived by two very special sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Sykes of Knoxville, TN and Dianne Bowman of Douglasville, GA; his very best friend, Gene Newlon, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Sykes was predeceased by a brother, David L. Sykes and a grandson, Michael Chapman.
