Sidney Paul Smith, Jr. passed away on December 24, 2024 with his wife and sons by his side at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. He was 89 years old, but always a kid at heart. Sid was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, granddaddy and just an all-around fun guy.
Sid was born on October 7, 1935, in Cades, South Carolina. He was the third of 4 sons born to Sidney Paul Smith, Sr. and Eunice DuBose Smith. With his family expecting a girl, Sid famously came home from the hospital wearing pink clothes—a start to life he credited for shaping his "kind and gentle soul” which defined him throughout his life.
Sid graduated from Hebron High School in 1955. He was a gifted athlete and was awarded the South Carolina Free Throw Champion award. His talents in high school baseball and basketball afforded him the opportunity to attend North Greenville Junior College on a dual scholarship.
It was there he met the love of his life, a cheerleader caught his eye, Patsy Caroline Chapman whom he would marry on August 18, 1956. During their college years, their favorite sweet treat were doughnuts on the grill. They would always each have two. They created a beautiful life together for over 68 years.
Sid transferred to Carson Newman to complete his college education. He and Patsy graduated together in 1958, each with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Over the course of Sid’s extensive professional career, he taught at several schools and universities inspiring and motivating countless graduates.
His doctoral program of study was completed at the University of Georgia. Dr. Smith was a tenured professor at Georgia State University. He served as a consultant for the Government and Travel agencies and travelled in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and the Oceania continents.
Throughout his career, he touched many hearts with his unwavering kindness and engaging wit that inspired graduates to become leaders. He always wore a smile and ever ready joke which he would gleefully tell with a twinkle in his eye!
Sid was preceded in death by his parents and brothers WB and Philip. He Is survived by his wife Patsy; his son, Dr. Sidney Paul Smith III and his wife Colleen; his son, Dr. Shanon Dail Smith and his wife Shelley. Sid is survived by grandchildren Lucia, Paul, David and Gracie Smith; Bo Ballance and his wife Gabby and Kaney Ballance. He is also survived by his brother Bob.
Sid leaves us with a legacy of wonderful memories. We will miss his presence in the physical world but we know he is now with the Lord.
