COLUMBIA - Robert E. “Bob” Hampton, 85, died Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Born on May 14th, 1937 in Frenchtown, New Jersey. He was the son of the late John E. Hampton and Marjorie B. Hampton. He graduated from Frenchtown High School and then moved to S.C. where he attended Newberry College on a basketball scholarship. Bob graduated from Newberry College (1961) and received a Master’s from University of South Carolina (1976).
He taught and coached at Bells High School in Ruffin, SC (1961-1963). He then coached basketball, football and taught physical education at Airport High School (1963-1973). He moved into the Lexington School District Two Office where he was in charge of all elementary, middle, and high school physical education and health programs. He then retired in 1991. He was a member of Airport High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He served on the Airport Education Foundation for many years. Bob was Executive Director of the S.C. Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (SCHPERD) Association (1972-2002).
He was an active member of Newberry College Letterman’s Club for 45 years, serving as a member of its Board of Directors for 11 years. He served as the Vice President for 2 years and President for 7 years. He was a member of the college’s President Club for 32 years, serving on its executive board for 2 years. He endorsed an athletic basketball scholarship. In 2007, he received a 150th Anniversary Newberry College Medal of Honor.
Bob was a dedicated and faithful member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church for over 60 years and participated on many committees including many leadership roles. One of which was serving on Church Counsel for 18 years, several of those as chairman.
Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dottie Yon Hampton. His children Marti Brunson (Brett), Paul Hampton (Gwen) and Ann Hampton. His grand children Breanna, Miranda, and Christian Hampton. He was predeceased by his grandson Bradley Hampton Brunson, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
