Renate Maria Jansen

Renate Maria (Ward) Jansen of West Columbia passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023 after a long illness. Born on February 1, 1944, in Frankfurt, Germany, she came to the United States in 1968 with her family. She worked in various positions at Fort Jackson and the U.S. Veterans Administration and she retired from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney's Office, where she was employed as grand jury coordinator. Renate loved and treasured her family, her friends, and her pets. She was predeceased by her late husband James C. Ward, her father Johann Steger, her mother Elisabeth Suter, and her step-father Rudolf Suter. She is survived by her husband John D. (Jack) Jansen, Jr., her sons Steven R. Ward, Timothy James Ward (Brenda), James E. Ward; step-sons Michael Piantedosi (Vicki), James Jansen and John A. Jansen (Lisa); as well as 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, on Saturday, February 25, 2023, followed by a service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PETS, Inc., P.O Box 6394, 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, 29171, where Renate worked as a volunteer until she was diagnosed with cancer.
