COLUMBIA — Mary Carol Mouzon Knox, 82, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away at her home surrounded by her family, January 5, 2023. She was born on July 5, 1940 in St. George, South Carolina, to Henry James Mouzon and Dorothy Mae Wimberly Mouzon.
Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Robert Thomas Knox, Sr. and son, Robert (Tommy) Knox, Jr. (Cathe) of Batesburg, and daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Thompson of Columbia. She had 5 grandchildren, Jamin Thompson (Vanessa) of Lexington, Crystal Knox (Christopher) of Theresa, New York, Justin Knox (Tonya) of Leesville, Bear Knox (Gladis) of Batesburg, Jamale Jeffery of Lexington and 10 great-grandchildren, Tyler Knox, Kaylee Knox, Will Knox-Cochran, Luke Thompson, Levi Thompson, Jaden Autry Jeffery, Will Gutowski, Elaine Gutowski, Oliver Gutowski, and Levi Gutowski. To her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, Mary was affectionately loved and known as Mimi.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant brothers and sister, Elizabeth Kay Mouzon.
Mary graduated from Walterboro High School, class of 1958. She worked as a clothing store clerk before marrying Bob and there after becoming a full-time mother of their two children.
Prior to her illness, Mary was active in writing classes at the Shephard's Center of Columbia and wrote many stories about her family. She was talented in quilting, scrapbooking, and cross-stitching (the latter of which she made a sampler for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.) Mary enjoyed collecting pink perfume bottles, Coca-Cola ornaments, tea cups, and many other collectibles.
Mary was a faithful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and served as the treasurer of her Sunday School Class, Open Forum Fellowship, at Greenlawn Baptist Church for many years. She loved children and played the piano for the children's choir, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and participated in many other children's programs at the church.
She was an active member of the adult choir singing as an alto.
Mary loved reading mystery stories, especially by Agatha Christie, and enjoyed watching old television programs such as Leave It to Beaver and Father Knows Best.
Visitation will be from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. followed by funeral services at 3:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Baptist Church on Sunday, January 8, 2023 with the Reverend Doctor Terry Cagle and Reverend Travis Hoeben, Jr. officiating. A graveside service will be held at Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro, SC at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023.
