Robert, fondly known as Bob, graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA in 1955 and the United States Military Academy at West Point in the class of 1959. He attained an MBA from the University of South Carolina. A career military officer, he served over 20 years in the U.S. Army before retiring in 1980. He served two combat tours in Vietnam, as well as tours in Italy, and several stateside assignments, earning several prestigious medals for his duty.
Following his service in the U.S. Army, Bob was employed for 20 years at the University of South Carolina as an adjunct professor and in the computer services department. He was a long-time member of St. Michael’s and all Angels Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities.
Bob was passionate about giving back. He was always the first to sign-up for any event that needed volunteers and busy hands. He positively impacted our community and will be deeply missed. Bob worked tirelessly as a foster parent for Catholic Charities where he and his wife fostered many children over the years. He was a past Governor of the South Carolina Chapter of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. Bob was busy, but he also found time to coach a little league football team and he loved building and flying model aircraft. He was a kind person, who never complained, and always wore a smile for his many friends and loved ones.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gertrude Annette (Peterson) Holman, and children Robert D. Holman (Kate), Glen A. Holman (Diana), Deborah A. Stikeleather (Jim) and Peter T. Holman.
