COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Leslie Ann Michael, 73, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in the church columbarium. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Ms. Michael passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Born at Walter Reed in Washington, DC, she was a daughter of Col. (Ret.) James R. and Eileen Michael. During her formative years, she was fortunate to have lived in such varied places as Singapore, Tucson, Paris, West Point and Fort Bragg, NC. Because of this, she developed a keen interest in other cultures and a lifelong interest in learning.
She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she received her BA and Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She was Vice President of her sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. Leslie started her teaching career at Ft. Bragg, NC, for 5 years before relocating to Columbia. She was a kindergarten teacher at South Kilbourne Elementary School for 26 years until she retired. From 2006-2009, she was in Namibia for the Peace Corps as a Primary Education Training Teacher.
She spent her retirement traveling to places like the Galapagos, Sicily, and the Snake River. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and volunteered at the food pantry as well as a hospice volunteer for Prisma Health. Hers was a life well lived, filled with service to others and adventure.
Surviving are her brother, Mark Michael (Karen); sisters, Sheridan Bell (Dr. Michael) and Michelle Higgins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
