Joanna passed away July 13, 2024. Born in New London, NC, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Lola Lefler. She was the youngest of seven children, and all predeceased her. Surviving are her daughters, Ellen Bateman (William T. “Buddy”) of Columbia, and Lydia Califf (Rob) of Durham, NC; four grandchildren, Sharon Califf (Chris Lawless) of Durham, NC, Sam Califf of Denver, CO, Tom Califf (Kathryn) of Breckenridge, CO, and James Bateman of Greenwood, SC. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren: Brooke, Noah, Tindal, June, Worth, Trale, Cameron and Reid; her sister-in-law, Joann Russell of Albemarle, NC, and many nieces and nephews. Among our Gammy’s final words were “I love all of you”.
Joanna was married to the late H. Crayon Carpenter for 51 years and was a member of Good Shepherd for 60 years. Her witness to a faithful life of service was shown through active church involvement, deliveries of Meals on Wheels, and caring for others. She retired as Head Teller from both Wells Fargo and First Citizens.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Frederic Smith of SC Internal Medicine for 26 years of exceptional care; the staff of Wildewood Downs for providing love and support the past 10 years; and the staff of MUSC-NE for their compassionate care in her final days.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, or a charity of your choice. Dunbar Funeral Home is assisting the family.
