Elizabeth Owen Sturkie

Columbia, South Carolina - Elizabeth "Betty" Owen Sturkie passed away on February 24, 2022 after a short illness. Born on October 26, 1935 in Charlotte, N.C., she was the daughter of Franklyn D. Owen, Sr. and Elizabeth Glasscock Owen. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Franklyn Owen Jr. and her sister, Nancy Owen Letton, and her husband, Douglas K Sturkie. Surviving to cherish her memory are her three children, Lee Burton, Barbara Guzior (Martin) and Katherine Wright; her grandchildren, Betsy Murphy (Frank), Kyle Wright (Jennifer), David Ziegler (Kimberly), Chris Ziegler (Claire), Jamie Segroves (James), Jon Guzior (Chloe) and six great-grandchildren, Owen and Ben Murphy, Maddie Ziegler, Adeline and Allan Ziegler and Savannah Segroves. She is also survived by her sister, Dr. Jeanne Owen. She deeply loved her family and was loved by them in return.

Betty graduated from Columbia High School and attended Sweetbriar College and USC. She was a member of Washington Street Methodist Church and later, Trenholm Road Methodist where she was secretary of the UMW and active on several committees. She was a member of the Candytuft Garden Club and the Palmetto Study Club. She was a volunteer for Hospice, the Red Cross and the Carillon parade, highlighting her generous spirit.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street, with visitation immediately after the service.
