Born on February 18, 1932 to the late James Wilmer Eargle and Estelle Friday Eargle, she was the sixth of their seven children. She grew up in Columbia, SC, was a homemaker and also helped run their family business, Griffin Electric.
Edith’s two loving children, son, Van J. Griffin and daughter, Wanda G. Taylor, along with her granddaughter, Hannah G. Lorance and her husband, Stephen Lorance, and her one great grandchild, Nathan Wayne Lorance, were the joy of her life. She is also survived by sister, Helen Eargle Johnson of Grand Prairie, TX and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Mildred Eargle Harvell, Ruth Idella Eargle Mangum, Hazel Naomi Eargle Franklin, James Marion Eargle, and Warren Edward Eargle.
Throughout her life, she was an active member at South Beltline Baptist Church and Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Edith’s life was based on faith and trust in God. She started each day reading her Bible and ended the day in prayer. Her favorite verse was, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, Philippians 4:16. She never met a stranger and always shared her smiles with others. Edith was once honored as the Volunteer of the Year for her service at the South Carolina State Mental Hospital.
Music inspired her life and she loved singing in the choir and at special services for friends and family. Edith’s favorite song was “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and she was proud to have sung it at a Sunday Morning Worship Service with Governor Carroll Campbell as their special guest.
Affectionately called Mama, Bama, Miss Sunshine and sweet Edith, she was the kindest, loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother we could have ever had. Our lives were richly blessed by her love and she will be dearly missed. Her love will always be in our hearts and the sun will shine a little brighter.
