COLUMBIA - Dr. Bryan McIver, age 63, died peacefully in Columbia, SC on December 16th, 2023. He was surrounded by his cherished family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Heidi Gautier; his beloved stepdaughters, Sandy and Adeline Gautier; his Mother, Bethia Mill Gillespie McIver; Sister, Shona Jane Victory (née McIver); Brother, James McIver and his dear dog, Penelope (Penny).
A luminary in the field of thyroid cancer, Bryan's legacy as an expert and leader in his field spanned continents. Born on January 4, 1960, in Dunfermline, Scotland, his early years were marked by a global journey, shaping his worldview and nurturing his unwavering commitment to medicine. In addition to his Scottish heritage, he was fiercely proud to be an American. His professional journey led him through prestigious institutions—from the University of Edinburgh Medical School to the Mayo Clinic and ultimately to his role as the Chief Medical Officer for Prisma Health Medical Group, Midlands, and a faculty position at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Bryan's impact reverberated across medical communities worldwide, evident in his pioneering work at the Moffitt Cancer Center and his pivotal role in establishing the Department of Head and Neck – Endocrine Oncology. His dedication to advancing diagnostic accuracy for thyroid nodules through genetic and molecular techniques remains a testament to his enduring contributions to the field.
Yet, beyond his professional achievements, Bryan's zest for life shone brightly. His love for celebrations infused every family gathering, where he reveled in the joy of togetherness. Traveling, especially to beaches and mountains, held a special place in his heart alongside his passions for flying, sailing, skiing, and dancing.
His spirit, ever effervescent, embodied the essence of living life to the fullest. With a love for Bombay Sapphire gin martinis, live bands, and the embrace of Heidi on the dance floor, Bryan's laughter and vitality echoed in the memories he etched into every heart he touched.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable soul, let us carry forward Bryan's legacy of joy, dedication, and the unwavering pursuit of passion in all facets of life. Though he may have taken his final bow, his spirit dances on, a testament to a life lived exuberantly and a legacy that shall endure for generations to come.
A Funeral Service for Dr. Bryan McIver will be held on Friday December, 22, 2023 at 1:00 pm, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Tampa, FL. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
