Douglas “Doug” James Faulkner, 82, of Columbia, S.C. passed away on December 13, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer. Services will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229 on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. to include full military honors.
Doug was born on July 25, 1940 to J.B. Faulkner and Elizabeth Baldwin Faulkner in Asheville, N.C. on the property of the Biltmore Estate. Doug’s mother passed away when he was 5 and he went to live with his Grandmother for a few years before he spent the remaining of his childhood and adolescence years at the Presbyterian Home for Children, in Black Mountain, N.C. It was there where he met lifelong friends, and his future wife Wilma Hall.
After Doug graduated from Enka High School, he enlisted in the United States Army where he spent the next 3.5 years in Darmstadt, Germany. Upon Doug’s return to the United States, he married Wilma and had two children, Tammy Faulkner Cornelius and Kenny Faulkner. In 1976, Doug and Wilma adopted their niece and nephew, Kim Fowler and Timmy Zackel. Doug was a super dad and uncle as he volunteered for field trips, coached football, baseball and softball. He was also the President of the Harding High School Booster Club where his children attended.
Doug worked his whole life in the Fastener Business in Management and in Sales for two companies, Interlock and Universal Fastener until he retired in 2005. After his retirement, he spent most of his days in the yard with nature, making jams, and traveling to the mountains.
Doug was predeceased in death by his mother, father, brother, Bob Faulkner, sisters, Barbara Roberts and Lou Kirby, and son-in-law, Edwin Cornelius.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Faulkner, daughter, Tammy Faulkner Cornelius, son, Kenny Faulkner (Sandy), niece, Kim Fowler (Randy), nephew, Timmy Zackel, grandchildren, Jamie Beidas, Ryan and Matt Matt Fowler, his sisters, Judy Faulkner Thompson (Bob) and Janice Faulkner Crump (Don), in addition to several more nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly. Doug is also survived by a few of his life-long friends from the Presbyterian Home for Children which is now named the Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth, and Families.
