COLUMBIA - Major Arthur Arlie Shrader (U.S. Army, Ret.), 64, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Born in Bluefield, WVa., he was a son of the late Arlie Rector and Ruby Elizabeth Nester Shrader. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Susan Lloyd Shrader; son, Scott Thomas Shrader of Columbia; daughter, Andrea Elizabeth Shrader (Chad Biel); grandchildren, Elliot Thomas and Alanna Susan Biel, all of Charleston. A graduate of Bluefield High School and Virginia Tech, he received a Master’s degree in Environmental Geology from USC. He was employed with SCDHEC as a hydrogeologist. He retired as a Major from the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam era and during the Gulf War, receiving a Bronze star. His hobbies included rock hounding, duck and deer hunting and Civil War history. He was past president of Columbia Gem and Mineral Society. Funeral service for Major Shrader will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014, at the funeral home.
