Maybert Titus Polk, of Oakvale, Mississippi, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the age of 99. Maybert Weir Titus was born on January 8, 1923 in Nanticoke, PA to Thomas John & Isabella Titus. After graduating from Hanover High School in 1940, she soon moved to New York City to attend New York City College. In 1943, while in New York, Maybert joined the Army Air Corp and served our country during WWII. August of 1943 had Maybert repairing radios in P38’s and P47 fighter planes in Newark, NJ and there Corporal Titus soon met and married her life-long partner of 62 years after a whirlwind courtship of just 6 weeks. MSGT Otto R. Jefferson, from Jefferson Davis County, MS and Corporal Maybert Weir Titus were married in Newark, NJ on October 5, 1945. Maybert was honorable discharged on October 31, 1945. She traveled the world with her husband during his military carrier. Along the way, Maybert studied to become chef and she will be remembered for her excellent cooking skills. She followed her husband once more when he came home to Jefferson Davis County in 1972. Maybert was a longtime member of Society Hill Baptist Church. Hoping to live to be 100 years old, Maybert Polk only made it 99 ¾ of the way to her 100th birthday.
She was preceded in death her parents; a sister, Myrtle Herrington; a brother, Thomas-John Richard Titus; a son, Thomas Reese Polk; a grandson, Rubin Bourn; and her beloved husband, Otto Reese “Chile” Polk. Maybert is survived by three daughters, Judith Ann Polk-Bourn (Thomas-John), Elizabeth Louise Polk-King (Alan) and LuAnn Carr; four grandchildren, Benjamin Bourn, Maybert Marie Bourn II, Brian King and Pamela King; seven great-grandchildren, Christopher Bourn, Tyler Hunter Bourn, Justin Graves, Austin Graves, Thomas Joel Bourn, Adeline Mullins and Wesley King; two great-great-grandchildren Jaxon Graves and Hasil Graves and her two feline companions, Blackie and Boo Boo.
There will be a visitation for Maybert at Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. The funeral service will be private. She will be laid to rest in Society Hill Cemetery.
