Lawrence Broom

Lawrence Broom, of Josephine, Alabama, passed away at his residence on Friday, June 18, 2021 at the age of 94. He was born in Columbia, Mississippi, served in the Merchant Marines, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Broom worked most of his life as a forestry contractor and has been a resident of Josephine for the past 14 years. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was devoted to his family. Mr. Broom was a loving and caring man who put everyone before himself. He gave generously to anyone who had a need and will be remembered for his many acts of kindness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Ora Broom; a sister, Lynn Graham; and his wife, Octavia Broom. Mr. Broom is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Grotefend (David), two sons, Jay Broom (Elaine) and Steve Broom (Renee’); a brother, Larkin Broom; six grandchildren, Lisa Grotefend-Gilstrap (Brad), Vicki Grotefend McKee, Carol Holloway (Aaron), Lawrence Broom (Darlene), Fernann Yosviak, and Steve Allen Broom (Christine); fifteen great-grandchildren, Zachary Wilkinson, Zoe’ Grotefend, Lanee McKee, Gracee McKee, Arica Holloway, Collin Holloway, Christian Holloway, Emory Holloway, Lauren Broom, Heidi Broom, Jackson Broom, Luke Broom, Emma Rae Broom, Isaac Yosviak, and Xander Yosviak; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be a visitation for Mr. Broom at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia on Monday, June 21, 2021 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. The funeral service will be at 10:00am on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 in the funeral home chapel. Gerald Broom and Paul Broom will officiate the funeral service and Janeice Baughman will share special music. Burial will follow in the Enon Baptist Church Cemetery assisted by Steve Allen Broom, Zachary Wilkinson, Collin Holloway, Christian Holloway, Kenneth Broom, Paul Broom, Mark Broom, and Aaron Holloway serving as pallbearers.
