Maggie was born in Wilmington, N.C. to the late Johnnie R. Brown and Maggie L. Chambers (Brown) on July 3, 1939, the oldest of 10 siblings. She was raised in Tin City, N.C. (Wallace). Maggie left home to live with an Aunt in Philadelphia, PA at the age of 19 and resided there until the last six years of her life. Maggie worked in the kitchen at Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH) and Bryn Mawr Hospital from which she retired after 40 years of faithful employment.
Maggie was involved in Church and community activities while living in Philadelphia, PA and enjoyed spending spare time watching television, talking to family and friends on the phone managing her household.
Maggie is preceded in death by her Mother, Maggie Brown and Father Johnnie Brown; her brother David Allen Brown, Johnny Mack Brown of Deep Bottom, N.C.; her brother Winfred Earl Brown of San Diego, CA; her sister Annie L. Brown of Philadelphia, PA; her brother Tommie L. Brown residing in Philadelphia, PA, and her brother James McKinley Brown, also residing in Philadelphia, PA.
Maggie is survived by her sister, Seretha Jean (Brown) Taylor of Philadelphia, PA; brother Willie Jordan of Philadelphia, PA, sister Alice P. (Brown) Montgomery of Philadelphia, PA and sister Dianne (Brown) Thaggard of Philadelphia, PA. Nephews; John L. Taylor, Johnny Frank Brown, Christopher Mack Brown, and Glenn Tobias Thaggard. Nieces; LaChon J. Taylor (Deceased), Shigeta Umeka McMillian, and Tammy Terrell Koonce.
Maggie is survived by her only child, daughter DeShanta Y. (Brown) Powell and Husband Jimmy Powell, residing in Columbia, MO. As a result of a blended family, Maggie is survived by five Grandchildren; Claudette Thompson, N.C., Tyrone K. Powell (Octavia), N.C., Tomia L. Harp (Nathaniel), VA, Jamil R. Powell (Amanda), Columbia, MO and Jimmy Powell II, N.C. Ten great grandchildren; Breana, E’MaeYa, TyRique, Montavia, Monj, Shyanne, Syuri, Jeremiah, Londyn and Journey.
There will be no formal funeral services, and the family requests live plants in Maggie’s memory to be sent to: Memorial Funeral Home, Crematory & Memorial Park Cemetery 1217 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia, MO 65202
