Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 10:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church, 606 Ridgeway Ave, Columbia, MO. Memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at the church, with Pastor Ron Foley officiating. Burial will be Monday, April 30, 2018 at Ft Leavenworth National Cemetery in Ft Leavenworth, KS with full military honors.
Jack was born on March 7, 1938 in Shelbina, MO the son of Sidney and Blanche (Brengle) Heathman who preceded him in death. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Peggy Barton, on September 6, 1958 in Lentner, MO, and they were wed for over 59 years, until his death. Jack was a veteran of the US Army, retiring in 1988 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Jack graduated from Shelbina High School. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He later earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He received an ROTC commission into the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He spent the next 28 years in the Army with tours in Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Japan, and numerous Army posts throughout the states. After retiring from the military, he worked as a contractor to the Army.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a long time member of the Gideons International and had been a member of Golden K Kiwanis.
Jack enjoyed NASCAR races and loved gospel Music. Most of all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, two children, Sheryl Winzek (Peter) of St. Louis; James Heathman (Bryn) of Montclair, NJ; five grandchildren, Nathaniel Remshardt, Gabriel Remshardt, Ruby Mae Heathman, Cal Heathman and Hugh Heathman; sister-in-law Patsy Heald (Roger Theobald) and brother-in-law Don Barton (Sherry) as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one son, Mark Edward Heathman and two brothers, Sidney Heathman (Bertha) and Logan Heathman (Mary E.).
