Janet Marie Hamilton, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on April 24, 2024. Janet's passion for literature, music, art, and her deep appreciation for the natural world enriched the lives of those around her.
Janet Marie George was born in Columbia, MO on December 18, 1947 the daughter of Joe and Irma (Koch) George. She graduated from Hallsville High School in 1965 and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in English from Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville, MO in 1969. During her time as a student in Kirksville, MO, Janet met and married Jesse Neal Kerns, and together had their son Mitchell Ray Kerns. Janet later met and married her husband Jerry Lee Hamilton, who preceded her in death in 2010.
One of Janet’s earliest jobs was detasseling corn for the University Farms. She then spent her working years as a secretary for the State of Missouri in Children’s Services and at University Hospital in scheduling. She will be remembered by her family as an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Janet is survived by her devoted son, Mitchell (Season) Kerns, who was a source of pride and love throughout her life. Her grandsons Maverick Kerns and Phoenix Kerns; two sisters, Jo Ann Schoenike, Joy (Paul) Lilienkamp; one brother, Jim (Joyce) George, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Hamilton, her parents Joe and Irma George, her sister Judith Petrillose, and her grandson Sawyer Kerns.
She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and love for the beauty of the world. In honoring Janet's memory, may we find solace in the memories we shared with her and in the enduring impact she had on our lives.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Adam Mustoe officiating.
Rest in peace, Janet Marie Hamilton. You will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the Daniel Boone Regional Library Foundation.
