Lula Belle Garris, daughter of the late Richard and Catherine Ollison, was born April 7,
1933, the third child of 7, in Mesic, North Carolina. She transitioned to her eternal
home on Thursday, November 26, 2020. Lula Belle is now resting in Christ.
Lula completed her high school education in Pamlico County in Bayboro, North
Carolina. After high school, she attended North Carolina A&T State University. While
attending a football game at A & T , Lula met the love of her life, Noah William Garris
(Billy). They would eventually marry, and from their union were born 3 children:
Catherine Cassandra Garris, Richard Aaron Garris, and William Darrell Garris.
Lula Belle worked as a nursing assistant at Holy Cross Hospital and as a medical
secretary for many years at Doctor’s Hospital in Washington, DC. She was a faithful
member of Saint John’s Freewill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, where she served
as a Sunday school teacher and as an usher. Lula’s most important role, however, was
that of a wife and mother. She was a devoted and loving wife to her beloved Billy for
almost 50 years.
As a wife and mother, Lula was known for her great cooking, especially sweet potato pie
and German Chocolate Cake! She also had an incredible knack for tidiness. Ask her
sister, Charity about that! Lula also loved cooking for her Billy. “Billy needs his food
straight from the pot to his mouth!” is what she was overheard saying one time. Cathy,
Rick, and Darrell often spoke of how she would read bible stories to them as children.
There are so many sweet memories that will live on beyond her.
Lula Belle is survived by her three children, Cathy, Rick, and Darrell and her sister,
Charity Jones. She leaves to cherish her loving memories four granddaughters: Taylor,
Sheridan, Jordan, and Gabrielle, and a host of nieces and nephews. For anyone who had
the pleasure of knowing Lula, the testament is always the same, She is such a sweetie pie !!
She is loved and she will be missed so very, very much.+
