Jung Kee Sung, M.D., 78, passed away on November 17, 2022. On January 2, 1944, he was born in Nagoya, Japan to Sung Moo Kyung and Byun Wol Chon, who preceded him in death. He was married for nearly 50 years to Boon Nim Sung, who passed away in 2020. He is survived by his daughters So Young Sung (Insoon Park), Seon-wha Sung, and Evelyn Chung, as well as his four grandchildren, Derek, Devon, Ellis and Jonathan.
Raised in South Korea with seven siblings, Jung Kee Sung was known as “Chopsticks” as a child because of his long thin legs. He once told his daughter that as a child during the Korean War, he had to hide in rice fields from North Korean troops. He said that he was not afraid at the time because it seemed like a game of hide and seek. A strong student, he attended Yonsei University for college and medical school. After medical school, he served in the Korean army. During that time, he met and proposed to his future wife, Boon Nim Sung, courting her by playing songs on his guitar and speaking of his dreams to move to America. After his army service, he and his wife moved with their newborn daughter to New York. He was a doctor of internal medicine for over forty years at Wyckoff Heights Hospital, specializing in oncology and hematology. An avid reader, he loved studying history and religion and watching films. After his beloved wife passed away, he lived in Florida then Maryland where he enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandchildren, discovering guitar concerts and new shows on streaming channels and taking regular trips to the Korean grocery.
The family will be holding a joint memorial for both Jung Kee Sung and his wife, Boon Nim Sung, in New York. Please email [email protected] for more information.
