There are a handful of people I have met over the years that stand head and shoulders above the rest, and John was certainly in the top of that list. After these many months since John’s passing, I still find it incredibly hard to picture him, well, not here.
I do not understand why someone so wonderful, true, kind and genuine had to leave this world when we so desperately need more just like him. I only know that the time I had the privilege to know him, to watch how he loved Nicky, to see how he adored his children, to see how he treated every single person he encountered with smiling kindnesses will forever live in my heart as a grand example of a marvelous human.
I end with this thought. I have met a few princes in my lifetime, a few who posed as such, but the true ones lived among us as ordinary men and we were graced and enriched by every moment of their presence. That was John to me.

I worked for John when I was an undergrad at the University of Iowa. I'm usually pretty terrible at keeping up with folks but do try to keep an eye on how they're doing from time to time. So I was shocked to learn today of John's passing. I understand my learning of this is well after the fact, but I thought it was important to let it be known that I deeply respected John greatly and I likely would not be where I am today if we hadn't crossed paths. And so I'm thankful that he enriched my life and am saddened that he is no longer with us and unable to be a shinning example to others except in the stories we'll tell of us. I wish his survivors peace.

I wanted to send my condolences to all of John's family.  I attended Western Dubuque HS with John.  Even at a young age he was truly a gentleman.  His willingness to help others understand things in class and his enthusiasm for learning always impressed me.  I am thankful to have known him.

John and Margaret Farrer, next door neighbours to Eric and Doreen Fox in Hitchin, Hertfordshire-England were privileged to get to know John during his visits to Nicola's home town.
We were devastated to learn of his sudden death and send our deepest condolences at this time to Nicola,James and Darcy, to Eric and Doreen, to Celestine and Eleanor and all John's relatives and friends.
Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad time.

John was one of those science students in Junior High School at Western Dubuque that every teacher would want and appreciate having in class. He was a fantastic person, always remembered the little things that he learned in school and will always be remembered by this teacher.  May His passion for science and learning be his legacy to future generations

For the past 3 years, I have come to know John through our work in the technology community at NASA Goddard.  I admired his persistence and his willingness to respond to my requests for help despite the demands in his  professional life.  He was one of the best scientists to work with at Goddard. He had a gentle and compassionate spirit which I will always remember. I will remember his family in my prayers.

This is just a quick note to let Nicky and the family know how much I admired John for his humble, even-handed approach to things and his obvious love and passion for his family and friends. He will be missed!

Words seem so inadequate to convey the sorrow we feel at John's passing.  Know that we continue to keep your entire family in our thoughts and prayers.  May joyful memories sustain you during these difficult moments.

John was one of the most knowledgeable and well rounded people I have ever come across. I have learned more over the past 8 months working daily with him then at any other time in my career. His patience and enjoyment in working with young engineers like myself made my experience with him priceless.  He was the type of leader you didn't mind working weekends and long hours for.  This was evident throughout the team, not just for me. He was was just that well liked and respected.  The opportunities he gave me during my time with him, and the memorable experiences I had working with him will never be forgotten.

I've known John since Jr. High at Western Dubuque.  We were in Chamber Singers together throughout high school.  Without John I would not have made it through Algebra II or Physics.  We all knew John was brilliant and headed for great things.  But the most amazing thing was that John never made us feel any less.  He was so modest and kind and humble.  I was honored to play and sing for him.  I will never look at the Northern Lights the same.

We wish to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of John, who epitomized both the depth and intricacy of the Universe -- who helped us all see the Universe a little better than before.  

One of the first questions in the old Baltimore Catechism was "Why were we created?"  The given answer was "To know, love, and serve the Lord, in this life and the next."  Certainly, John achieved all three in his relatively short stay with us.  John and John's spirit were special and unique when he arrived, were evident in the magnitude of his life and many achievements, and will remain so for all eternity. 

Although there is certainly a time and purpose in mourning, John and his life are deserving of celebration, too; as we feel gratitude for his many gifts, and not resentful that we wanted more.  

John's life is large -- and one could confidently conclude that John wants his family and acquaintances to be as large as the Universe in accepting the timing of it.  Everyone he touched is better for it.  

We pray that we can all accept both his life with us and his sudden passing as part of a much larger plan and divine will that started with his creation. If we can look past those dark parts of ourselves, we will see the shining light that John's life exhibited so brightly -- today and always.

Dear Nicky, I am terribly saddened and shocked by the sudden passing of John. He was a good friend and an outstanding collegaue. My heart goes out to you and the littel ones.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing.  John was a classmate of mine at Western Dubuque and the University of Iowa and was a great person.  You have my deepest sympathy.  He will be missed.

I will always have warm memories of John and offer my most sincere condolences to all of John's family and friends at this difficult time.

I was terribly sorry to hear about John's death.  I had only just started to work with him, and now I won't really have a chance to know him.  He always seemed to be a very nice and very intelligent person.

Sincere condolences to your family.  I only knew John for a couple of years but he was always very frindly and nice.  Always willing to help.  He will be missed here at Goddard.
