Allen was born on November 4, 1930 to Richard Henry Timberlake, Sr., and Elizabeth James Timberlake in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the youngest child and brother to Richard Henry Timberlake, Jr., George Phillip Timberlake, and Margaret Wolcott Timberlake Young. His family moved to Steubenville, Ohio when he was two years old. He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1948 with high honors in math. He then began studies at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. After freshman year, he returned to Steubenville and worked for the Steubenville Herald Star in advertising.
In 1951, Allen enlisted in the newly formed Air Force and served at Lowry AFB and O’Hare AFB. On New Year’s Eve 1952, a mutual friend invited Allen to a party while he was home on leave, at the home of Nancy Myers, whom he had known since first grade. Allen and Nancy began dating and corresponding. They were married on September 18,1954 in Steubenville, by Allen’s brother, the Reverend George P. Timberlake. After Allen left the Air Force in 1955, he returned to Kenyon College. His first child, Carolyn Estelle, was born in 1956. Allen graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics in 1958. He often joked that he was on the college ten-year plan. Allen continued his study of physics in graduate school at Ohio State University immediately following. In 1959, his second daughter Sandra Elizabeth was born. In 1960, Allen began working at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Lisa Margaret was born in 1963, and Susan Wolcott was born in 1967. In 1969, Allen accepted a position at Honeywell in Lexington, MA and the family moved to Chelmsford, MA. In 1973, Allen joined Westinghouse at Friendship Airport (soon to become BWI) where he continued to serve his country by developing advanced materials and processes for critical defense programs. Allen and Nancy built and moved into their beloved home in Columbia, MD. After a lengthy and well-respected career, Allen (aka Big Dog) retired from Northrop Grumman in 1997.
Throughout his life, Allen was a loving, loyal, generous son, brother, uncle, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is known for his gentle spirit and sense of humor. He has always followed sports, primarily college football, where his children realized the depth of his passion for The Ohio State Buckeyes. Moving to Maryland, he became an avid Washington Redskins fan also. Allen always followed current events, whether through the Columbus Dispatch, Boston Globe, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, or evening news. Allen enjoyed classical music especially when relaxing after work or on Sunday mornings.
Allen is survived by the love of his life Nancy Howe Timberlake, with whom he celebrated a 68th wedding anniversary in September. Also, by his daughter Carolyn Timberlake Dozat, son-in-law Adron Dozat, grandchildren Timothy Allen Dozat, David Wesley Dozat, Joseph James Dozat, and Madeline Nancy Dozat. His daughter Sandra Timberlake Macejik, son-in-law Glen Edward Macejik, granddaughter Katherine Elizabeth Macejik. His daughter Lisa Margaret Timberlake, son-in-law Paul Schnitker, granddaughters Jaimee Michelle Shaffer, Samantha Leigh Shaffer, and great-granddaughter Isabella Lisa Timberlake. His daughter Susan Timberlake Gentry, son-in-law Mark Allen Gentry, grandchildren Dana Lenora Gentry, Matthew William Gentry, and Michael Anthony Gentry. As well as 13 nieces and nephews. Allen will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial Service will be held at the Witzke Funeral Home, 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, Maryland, on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 3pm. Reception begins at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital.
