Born on September 15,1963 in Los Angeles, California to Dr. Alan King and Bonnie Smith King, Kelly was the second child after his sister Karen King and followed by his sister Kerry King. After five years on the east coast, the King family returned to California and settled in the Redlands/ Loma Linda area when Dr. Alan King began working in ObGyn at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Kelly attended Redlands Junior Academy and graduated from Loma Linda Academy in 1982. Kelly attended Pacific Union College, then turned to Loma Linda University for a masters in microbiology before continuing on to medical school at Loma Linda University. In 1997, he finished his training in ObGyn, following in his father's footsteps. Kelly began his medical career at Kaiser Permanente where he worked for the next 16 years. He was a respected physician and delivered countless babies. In 1996, Kelly married Madeleine Barkhuizen and they made their home in Redlands. Their son Dakota was born in 1999 and followed by daughter Katie born in 2001.
Even as a small child, Kelly showed exceptional athletic ability. He was an avid skier since age 5 and loved the family’s frequent trips to Mammoth Mountain. Kelly was also a serious sportsman. He hunted big game in Africa and took annual hunting vacations with his friends. Kelly enjoyed travelling with his family to the beach, Yosemite, Florida, and all the national parks. Kelly especially loved being a father. He seemed happiest when helping with nightly homework, taking Katie to soccer and volleyball practice, watching movies, taking them skiing, or hunting with Dakota. Dad’s dinners were becoming quite a hit as Kelly developed an interest in cooking.
Kelly was blessed with many close, lifelong friendships. He cherished those relationships, and kept close through their frequent adventures such as hunting in North Dakota, helicopter skiing in Colorado, canoeing in Canada, fishing in Laredo, and countless minor shenanigans.
In addition to his wife and children, Kelly is survived by his mother Bonnie Smith King and sisters Karen King and Kerry King. Kelly is deeply mourned by his family and many many friends, colleagues, and patients.
