Walt was born on September 16, 1946, in Reinstädt, Germany, as the son of Wasyl and Anna Fedorczuk, who courageously fled Ukraine during World War II to seek a better future. After immigrating to the United States, the family settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Walt grew up with his siblings, Maria and Peter. He was raised in the strong and unwavering traditions of the St. Constantine Ukrainian Catholic Church, where his faith was nurtured and shaped.
He attended DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, excelling academically and forming lifelong friendships. Walt later pursued higher education at the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, an achievement that reflected his dedication to learning and perseverance.
Walt answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force in 1969. Over a distinguished 23-year military career, Walt demonstrated unwavering commitment and exemplary leadership, achieving the rank of Captain before his retirement in 1991. His service took him across the globe, including deployments in Thailand, Germany, and various locations in the United States. A highlight of his service was the opportunity to travel with his beloved wife, Susan, and her parents, Phyllis and Woody to Israel during Christmas of 1975, an experience he deeply treasured for the rest of his life.
Following his retirement from active duty, Walt continued to dedicate himself to the military community by working at the United States Air Force Academy. He found great purpose and joy in transporting Air Force cadets to athletic activities.
Above all, Walt was a family man. He shared 52 wonderful years of marriage with his soulmate, Susan, who stood by his side through every journey, challenge, and triumph. Together, they raised two children, Tasha Jacobs (husband Robert) and Nikolas Fedorczuk. His pride as a grandfather knew no bounds as he cherished his seven grandchildren: Julia Searle (27) (husband Tristan), Tyler Jacobs (17), Kaitlyn Jacobs (15), Jessica Jacobs (11), Nickson Fedorczuk (9), and twins Raegan and Madison Fedorczuk (7) Each of them was touched by his humor, warmth, and boundless love. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Fedorczuk (Tim Vescio), and brother, Peter Fedorczuk. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Wasyl and Anna Fedorczuk.
Walt had a deep passion for life that extended beyond his military and family roles. He loved spending time on the water, whether it was boating or fishing. He loved coin collecting and traveling throughout Europe-Walt and Susan especially enjoyed their five years living in Europe, where they immersed themselves in the rich cultures and landscapes of the continent. He found great joy in spending time with his family playing card games late into the night, sharing stories over dinner, and making pierogies and sauerkraut soup —a delicious homage to his Ukrainian heritage. Walt brightened every room he entered. His sense of humor was ever-present, lighting up every room and bringing laughter to those around him.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Walt’s remarkable life will be held on April 30, 2025, at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N Carefree Circle, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Military honors will be held immediately following the funeral service at Holy Apostles. Walt will be buried at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs
