Stanley Francis Joachim, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, and pastor passed away quietly in his home on December 23, 2020, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born on July 15, 1931 to Lenore Sybil Ephraums and Claude Randal Joachim in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was the sixth of seven children, the youngest of the five who survived beyond childhood.
He finished high school in Kandy, Sri Lanka in 1946, finished Southern Asia Bible College in Bangalore, South India in 1959, and completed a Doctorate in Theology from Southern California Theological Seminary in 1986. Prior to college, he worked as a stenographer and joined a group of volunteers to educate farmers on the use of tractors in the North of Sri Lanka. Adventures included hunting for food and being chased by an elephant! Then came the call of God into service through the church. He served in youth ministries at Colombo Gospel Tabernacle in his early 20s. He left Sri Lanka for London, England in 1960. He held various jobs to “learn the ropes” and stay afloat as he made his way from London, England to Pasadena, California, USA in 1961. He received credentials from the Assemblies of God in 1963. He served in various ministries in Southern California from 1963 -1970, when he joined New Avenue Assembly in Alhambra as an assistant pastor. In 1974 he joined Calvary Chapel Assemblies of God in Los Angeles as an associate pastor, working alongside his mentor and dear friend Pastor Warren Berwick until 1987, at which time he was elected senior pastor. He served as senior pastor at Calvary Chapel until 1993. He went on to serve at South Pasadena Assemblies of God, until retiring from ministry in 2008.
Family was at the center of Stanley’s life. He was devoted to them, lived for them, and loved being around them. This included his dear wife, three daughters, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, beloved cousins and friends around the globe. He valued correspondence and strove to stay connected. He loved to travel. He enjoyed frequent trips to visit family in Sri Lanka, Australia and England and globe-trotting trips to see the world. From Europe to China, Singapore, Korea, Russia, Hong Kong, Norway, Taiwan, Romania, Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, he could not travel enough!
He leaves behind to treasure his memory and carry on his kind heart, good deeds, and legacy, his devoted wife Chandra, loving daughters, Cheryl, Sharlene and Rochelle, treasured grandchildren, Evan, Ariana and Andrew, Jacob and Marah, caring sons-in-law Stephen and Donny, precious sisters-in-law, and a host of wonderful nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who are immensely grateful for his life, love, kindness, humor, generosity and hospitality and will miss him dearly.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 2, 2021 from 2 pm – 6 pm at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. A remembrance of life service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Friendship Assembly at 3685 New Center Point, Colorado Springs. A memorial service in Los Angeles California will be held later in 2021, when restrictions on gatherings are lifted.
