On March 20, 2015, Richard N. Sunderland, 89, passed away in Colorado Springs. He was born December 19, 1925, to Sherman and Marie (Dietrich) Sunderland in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1975 retiring with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. His military travels took him to Germany, France, England, Korea and many U.S. states. In 1948 he married Matilda M. Figura and they shared 50 years together until her passing. He married Mary Margaret (Chavez) Rodriguez in 2000 who survives him.
After his military retirement he worked in the banking field. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Toastmasters International and the Knights of Columbus.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Regis, William, Sherman, Robert Chester, James and on sister Virginia. In addition to his spouse Margaret, he is also survived by two sisters, Mary Geisler and Lois Kraeling (Robert) and sister-in-law Janice Sunderland and children, Gerard Sunderland and Rosemarie Craft (Rick), his extended family Leigh Ann Alvarez (Tom), Michael Rodriguez (KayDeane) Carol Lenahan (Harry), grandchildren Ryan (Angela), Rachel, Richard, Harry (Bridget), Jacob, Ryan, Amy, Ashley, Natalie and Phillip, and five great-grandchildren.
A Rosary is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 2015, Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 927 N. Logan, Colorado Springs, Colorado with the Mass of Christian Burial following at 3:00 p.m. The burial will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado on Friday, March 27 at 12:30 p.m.
