Mary Jane passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2022, at the age of 71. She was a beloved sister, and known by her many nieces and nephews as “Cool Aunt MJ.” In addition to her large family, Mary Jane was a dear friend to many. Her love and passion for social justice shaped the hearts and minds of anyone privileged to know her.
She was born to Ruth and Daniel J. Sullivan, Jr. in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Radnor, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her siblings, Daniel, Peter, James, Becky Craig, Paul, Matthew and Rosemary, and many nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Cabrini University, Mary Jane adventured to Duquesne University and the Sourboune in pursuit of a Masters in Philosophy. Landing in New York City she immersed herself into the New York culture and worked on many humanitarian projects including documentaries, lectures and publications. She traveled from New York to London, to Paris, to Nicaragua, to Northern Ireland, to Sarajevo, before settling in Colorado to revel in her deep love of the mountains and Native American culture.
Mary Jane was a lifelong pursuer of knowledge and accrued multiple degrees. She graduated magna cum laude from The European Graduate School with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Critical Media Studies, only after honing her craft with a masters in Film from The New School.
In addition to shaping and challenging young minds through her teaching, she was a published poet, editor, writer, documentary film director/producer, and talented photographer. Mary Jane’s greatest gifts, of which there were so many, was her exuberant presence and thirst for life.
