Mary Ann Smelker was born on September 30th, 1934, in Pfeifer, Kansas to Jerome and Josephine Stegman. She was the oldest of 21 children. She passed away peacefully on September 16, 2022, in Colorado Springs at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Victor Smelker, her parents, and one brother and a great-great granddaughter.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Karla (Doug) Schleder; her four sons: Tim (Trish), David ( Anne), Kevin (Suzanne) and Scot (Wendy), and 19 siblings. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
Mary Ann was a woman with a strong devotion to her faith and family. She was always thankful for large family gatherings, travelling to see relatives and activities with her children and grandchildren. Her acts of kindness touched many people, from cooking a plethora of goodies and distributing them at Christmas and offering her home to those needing a place to stay. Mom was a Christian mentor to many and provided those lives she touched a compass for the values and morals to direct our actions and thoughts.
A mass of Christian burial for Mary Ann will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N Carefree Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80917.
A Rosary service to be held at 10:15 AM at Holy Apostles Catholic Church prior to the mass of Christian burial on October 13, 2022.
Following the funeral service there will be a committal service from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 Hancock Expy, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
