Martha James Hammond of Colorado Springs, Colorado died on December 13, 2024. Born in Greenville, South Carolina on July 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Herbert James and Mabel Adams James. Martha graduated from Greenville High School and attended Furman University.
Martha lived most of her life in Atlanta, Georgia. She worked as a high school substitute teacher and as a sales associate for women’s clothes for many years helping to put both of her sons through college.
Martha is survived by Joseph and Kerri Hammond, grandchildren Griffin Hammond, Elizabeth Hammond and partner Joe Brandenburger, Jackson Hammond, Jordan and Alexis Hammond, and great grandson Peter Hammond.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Eugene Willard Hammond, Jr., her son Eugene Willard Hammond, III, daughter-in-law Carol Griffin Hammond, brothers William Bernard James, Joseph Herbert James, and John Albert James.
Martha enjoyed trips with her husband to visit family and friends. She was active in weekly exercise classes in Atlanta, enjoyed reading, and supporting the Atlanta Braves. Martha lived life to the fullest and most of all cherished her family and friends.
Martha was a lifelong Episcopalian as a member of St. Martin in the Fields in Atlanta and St. Matthias in Monument. Martha participated in many church groups through the years including Daughters of the King.
Family and Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 18320 Furrow Road, Monument, Colorado on Saturday January 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Red Cross or charity of choice.
