Leo Schwartzenberger, age 93, passed away on October 2, 2021, in Colorado Springs, CO. Leo was born July 31, 1928, to Thomas and Helen Schwartzenberger, in Napoleon, North Dakota. After attending school in North Dakota, he joined the Air Force at the age of 17. He married Magdaline “Maggie” Horner October 4, 1951, in Napoleon. During his 20-year Air Force career, the young family lived in a variety of places stateside and overseas. Leo retired from the Air Force with rank of Master Sergeant in 1966, in Colorado Springs. Upon retirement, he worked for Colorado Interstate Gas and Colorado State Department of Corrections, from which he also retired. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, volunteering and tutoring at a local elementary school and volunteering in a variety of church activities, including Knights of Columbus.
After Maggie’s death on August 28, 2007, he married Ruth Ward August 15, 2009. Leo and Ruth enjoyed traveling, gourmet club and church activities. Leo is survived by his wife, Ruth Ward, son Dr. Steve Schwartzenberger, DVM (Dori), Longmont, granddaughters Shevin Haverty, Blum, TX, Sharee Schwartzenberger, Longmont; step-daughters Cindy Dillon and Jen Lennon (Greg), Colorado Springs, step-grandchildren, John Dillon (Alexa), Elbert, Julie Dillon, FL, Evan Lennon, OK, Ryan Lennon, Canada and Kate Lennon, Colorado Springs; siblings Frances and Vic, Michigan, sisters-in-law Alvina Piatz, Irene Horner, Napoleon, ND; nephew Jim Horner (Deb), Littleton, great-nephews Kevin Horner (Beth), Castle Rock, Nic Horner (Emily), Littleton, and many nieces and nephews in Michigan and North Dakota.
Leo is predeceased by his parents, his parents-in-law, Peter and Theresia Horner, siblings Katie, Elizabeth, Margaret, Joseph, Clara, Thomas and step-son Don Ward.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Catholic Church at 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 8, 2021, with visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M. Interment will take place at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO, at a future date.
Leo and his warm and giving spirit will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
