Jose Benjamin Mestas, 93, of Fountain, Colorado, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2023 at home surrounded by those that love him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, and friend.
Jose was born in Guy, New Mexico on January 6, 1930 to Juan and Mary (Vialpando) Mestas. He was the oldest of four brothers. When the depression forced his family to leave New Mexico they relocated to Fountain, Colorado. Working from a young age, all the wages earned by him and his brothers went to support the entire family.
At age 18, Jose enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He served honorably during World War II and the Korean War. After his service in the United States Marine Corp, Jose worked in civil service with the United States Army at Fort Carson where he was recognized for exceptional performance.
He was preceded in death by Minnie Dorothy (Aragon) Mestas, his beloved wife since April 9, 1949; his brothers Edward and Tony Mestas; and his grandson Michael Mestas.
He is survived by his loving children John Mestas and Linda McGee; his grandchildren Pamela Westover, Karen Perry, and Jennifer Mestas; his great grandchildren Courtney (Perry) Rens, Lauren Westover, Robert Westover, Kamya Perry, Lola Mestas and Mary Mestas; his great-great grandchildren Giovanni and Mateo Rens; his brother Simon Mestas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jose could not sit still for too long - even in his later years he could be found chopping wood, tending to his garden, feeding birds, and working on various projects around his house and yard. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going on road trips, camping and fishing, sharing stories, reading books and newspapers, watching sports, and snacking on his favorite candies.
He will be dearly missed, but there is peace in knowing he is at home in Heaven with Jesus.
A visitation is scheduled for Friday. June 16, 2023 from 9:30 am - 10:30 am, followed by a rosary at 10:30 am, and then a funeral mass at 11:00 am at St. Dominic Catholic Church (5354 US-85, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80911). Jose will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Fountain, CO.
Flowers may be sent to St. Dominic Catholic Church (5354 US-85, Colorado Springs, CO 80911)
