Jose was born at home, the 3rd of 10 children, in San Luis, CO to Daniel and Beatrice (Sanchez)
Gallegos.
He is survived by his children, Sharon (Val) Apricio, Gail Roepka, June (Pete) Belletti, and
Ron (Carri) Gallegos. Grandchildren Daniel (Shell) Apricio, Michael Apricio, Alyse Belletti,
Erika Gallegos and Jeremy (Charissa) Roepka. Great grandchildren Anthony Gallegos, Rocky Roepka and
Harper Belletti- Motley. Siblings Connie Vaughn, Tony Gallegos, Sammy Gallegos, Bernice
Young, Arthur Gallegos and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents,
brother Nicky Gallegos and sisters Sophie Martinez & Irene Maes.
Growing up he helped cut wood every morning before going to school to heat the family home. He
helped work the potato and cauliflower fields to help his family financially. He attended grade school
and high school in the San Luis Valley. Upon graduation he joined the military. He was
married to Senovia (Martinez) Gallegos for 26 years. Jose served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force
retiring October 1972. Retired from the Air Force Reserves July 1982. He was an aircraft
mechanical engineer. Upon retirement he started a second career as an automotive mechanic.
Jose enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, painting amazing scenes on our front window every
Christmas for many years, bingo caller, dancing, tinkering on family vehicles and was quite the
handyman. He enjoyed sharing stories of his life and military career. He lived a remarkable
life and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
