Jean Margaret Long, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on March 24, 2016 (Maundy Thursday) in Colorado Springs. She was an only child in Chicago, Illinois on June 16, 1917 to Robert and Ruth McKinstrie.
Jean grew up in Ohio. She earned her education degree in 1937 from Miami University in Oxford. After graduation, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Lyons, Ohio where she met fellow teacher and the love of her life, Paul Howard Long. Jean and Paul were married in 1941. Paul was a career Air Force officer and served during World War II. After the war, they traveled the world (fulfilling Paul’s military commitment) and started a family. In 1956 Jean and Paul moved to Colorado Springs. Three years later, Paul died at the age of 44. Jean then began the work of raising three children as a single mom.
Jean is remembered as a kind, loving, and caring person. Her warmth, generosity and sense of humor always made people feel welcomed and valued. She modeled humility, grace and joy to those who were lucky enough to know her. Jean was a member of the First Lutheran Church and several Bible Studies. She loved music, literature and nature. She leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus and a loving commitment to her family and friends.
Jean is survived by her children Kirk Long (Sandy), Bonnie Light (Tommy), and Becky Weiss (Bill); as well as precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean adored her Ohio friends and family including many nieces and nephews who traveled often to be with Aunt Jean in Colorado.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Pikes Peak Hospice or The Springs Rescue Mission.
