Hazel married Alden Skinner July 31, 1949 at the First Christian Church in Cimarron. The couple farmed in Finney County and later in Gray County. Their children attended Theoni School and that was when Hazel started driving a school bus for USD 457. Later they moved to Garden City where she drove a school bus for thirteen years and was active in the Garden Valley Church. In 1979 they moved to Denver, Colorado, where, at ½ a century, she started working for National Cable Television Institute and Quantum Communications. After twenty years there, she and Al retired back to Garden City.
Ten years later, multiple myeloma took her back to Colorado for treatment. The cancer went into remission, but this time they stayed there, first at Parker, Colorado and then in Colorado Springs in the foothills below Pikes Peak.
