George Ormand Prentiss, of the mountains outside of Bellvue, Colorado, moved to his heavenly home to be with Jesus his Savior, on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. He was 72. His brother Rob was by his side when he passed into glory.
He was born on August 28, 1949 to Norval and Ingeburg (Schuller) Prentiss in Fort Meade, Maryland.
After high school, he learned many trades and skills, including being a ranch hand, counselor, working with plants in a nursery, a dog breeder, building wood pallets and chopping firewood. He grew to become an expert mechanic, a precision welder and a property manager.
He even designed and built his own cabin along with Marilyn. The mountain cabin was complete with solar, electrical, and INDOOR plumbing. Can I get an Amen?! (He also had outhouses available for use.)
He had an inordinate amount of common sense which probably kept him alive in the woods alone.
He survived at least 3 forest fires, the most recent of which was the Cameron Peak fire of 2020. He became a celebrity on the daily fire report for a local news station with the sheriff letting George's fans know he was okay in the middle of the fire. George received awards for 20, 25 and 30 years of service as a weather station observer.
Always a thrifty bargain hunter, he found many useful items, tools and movies.
He is survived by his mother, Inge Prentiss, and siblings, Chris "Spoon" Veatch (Ace) and Robert Prentiss (Carol), four nieces - Holly, Tiffany, Angela and Melody, and three nephews - Ryan, Nathan and Kevin, and also by many beloved friends.
He had several trusty canine companions through the years. His most recent is Winnie, who survives him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norval.
George loved the peacefulness of the mountains and the challenge of living in the wilderness. He enjoyed welcoming guests to his home to fish, camp, zipline and hike.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. "Mountain Man George" was a unique individual who was rugged and yet kind, independent yet hospitable, determined and yet surrendered to following Jesus. Now he is soaring on even greater heights. Thank you George. Rest high on that mountain in heaven.
