Evonne was born to George and Doris Ernst in Sloan, Iowa. She was the eldest of four siblings. She worked very hard as a young girl, helping her parents with every aspect of farming and raising the family. She graduated from Sloan High School in 1943 and attended Marion College, Marion, Indiana for 2 ½ years, receiving her teachers certificate. She taught school in Hornick and Sloan, Iowa. She married Warren Johnson in 1948 and celebrated 65 years of marriage. Evonne taught elementary school and when her first child was born, she became a stay at home mom. She had four children, nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Evonne was involved in many aspects of evangelism. She especially loved working with children, having “Good New Club” in her basement or backyard, a telephone child evangelism program, taught many years of Sunday School and Vacation Bible Schools. She led many women’s ministries such as Wesleyan Women’s Missionary Society, MOP’s, and Bible Studies. She was a member of the church board and on the CEF board of directors. She was forever serving others with meals in her home or taking meals to others. She was involved in many prayer ministries, her favorite being a prayer partner with Life Network Pregnancy Center. Her desire was to share Jesus with everyone she knew. Because Warren was a builder, she had the privilege of naming one of our streets in Colorado Springs, Providence Dr.
In Evonne’s sacred journey to Heaven this last month; she expressed her gratitude of her loving family coming to celebrate her 92nd birthday with her! When she learned that she had cancer on January 30th, she said, “Oh, that doesn’t sound good, BUT, I am excited to get to go to Heaven sooner than I thought, AND, when I get there, I am going to throw my arms around Jesus and give Him a big kiss!!!” (And I am sure that it was the other way around!!!)
Evonne will be missed, but she is not dead, she is alive in Heaven!! Glory!
Memorial contributions may be made in Evonne’s honor to Life Network, 3700 Galley Rd., Colorado Springs, CO. 80909.
Arrangements under the direction of Memorial Gardens Cemetery & Funeral Home, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
