Ellis “Tubby” Orlin Gaddy, a lifelong Calhan resident passed away peacefully on October 21, 2010 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ellis was born April 29, 1920 in Calhan, Colorado to parents Archie and Margaret (Goforth) Gaddy. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Stevens, and two brothers, Herchel Leroy Gaddy and Everett Gaddy.
Ellis graduated from Calhan High School in 1940. Following graduation, he worked in the construction field helping build barracks at Fort Carson. He entered into the U.S. Army in September 1942 and served in World War II through February 1946. Upon his discharge from the Army, he worked setting electric lines for the local rural electric company, farming and operating a thrashing business.
On October12, 1947, Ellis married Jeannine A. Huck. Also in 1947, Ellis and Jeannine began driving a school bus for Calhan School District, a job which they continued until 1995. Ellis owned and operated Gaddy Truck Service from 1948 until his retirement in 1998, hauling livestock all over the United States. Throughout the years, he also enjoyed ranching and raising commercial cattle.
Ellis was an avid baseball fan. He loved playing baseball in his younger years, coaching summer league softball and was a diehard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. In recent years, Ellis enjoyed sitting on his sun porch reading his books, any opportunity to go for a drive and having visitors stop by to see him.
Ellis is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Jeannine, daughter, Peggy Gaddy and daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Patty, Rodger and Cassidy Woodard.
A celebration of life will be held for him on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Calhan United Methodist Church in Calhan, Colorado. Visitation will be held at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 on Sunday October 24th between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
