Bernice (Dominguez) Barrett was born on the border between the United States and Mexico. She grew up between San Diego and Mexicali Mexico as she held dual citizenship. She was the only child of Gabriel Dominguez and Berniz (Monroy) Dominguez who both preceded her in death. She met her husband, Lonny Lee Jacob Barrett in August of 1990 in San Diego Ca., and they preceded to date for 4 months before Lonny requested her hand in marriage in November 1990. They were married in the Catholic Church in Mexicali Mexico on December 15, 1990. Despite their short courtship, they remained together and in love during 14 moves between 3 different states, her husband’s 3 deployments and his entire 20-year Naval Career for a total of over 31 years together.
Because she was unable to work, she spent an incredible amount of time volunteering. While her children were young, she proudly wore the title of “Team Mom” for all her kid’s sports teams. Later in life, she spent countless hours volunteering for so many organizations and serving on non-profit boards in Colorado Springs over the last 15 years. She advocated to help families in need, Veterans, and abused women and children. She had an undying energy to help those in need, and the TESSA and Veterans Communities will feel the impact of her loss.
She loved crafting, watching horror movies, riding on the Harley with her husband and the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association on rides and trips to Sturgis. Most of all, spending family time with her husband and children she always tried to make sure the immediate family all got together at least once a month.
Bernice is survived by her husband Lonny, daughter Britt Smearman (Nick) of Colorado Springs, CO., son Cody Barrett (Kelsie) of Peyton, CO., and a stepson that she loved as her own Emmanuel Cisneros of Grand Junction CO. Many cousins, aunts and uncles and extended family.
A few short weeks before her passing, Bernice was incredibly excited to learn she was going to be a Grandmother and was looking forward to being called “Nana-saurus.”
