Beverly Fern Thompson

Born on January 17, 1942, in Colorado City, Fern was the cherished daughter of Ewell Leslie “Slim” Smith and Maggie Sue Smith. She grew up with 8 siblings in China Grove and she graduated from Colorado High School in 1960. After spending a year at Sul Ross University, she returned home to Colorado City.

Fern's greatest joy came from her family, particularly her daughter, Jana, who was a constant source of pride and support throughout her life. In 1977, she married Leo Thompson, and together they shared a loving partnership that spanned 47 years.

Fern's career was diverse, ranging from head cashier at Max Berman’s department store, salesclerk at Sam L. Majors Jewelers, Dental Assistant for Dr. Billy Bridgford, bookkeeper at City National Bank, to Assistant Office Manager at Hutchins Ford, at which she retired from in 1983. However, it was during her retirement that she truly found her passion as an antique dealer and raising Maltese and Yorkie puppies. She was a person of many interests and talents. She loved animals, especially her beloved dog, Lilly. She was an avid collector of many things, especially antiques – and particularly loved antique auctions. Christmas was her favorite holiday, filling her living room with gifts and joy every year. She also kept a beautiful flower garden, a place of sanctuary and solace for her.

She had a profound love for music and faith in God. Fern was an integral part of her church community, singing solos and playing the organ for many years. But above all, she cherished her family, especially her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Though a force of nature, Fern was an immensely tender and loving grandmother. Her role as a grandmother was perhaps what she excelled at most. She and her husband Leo made their home a magical haven for their grandchildren, creating lasting memories and wonderful adventures, such as building forts in the living room with blankets and chairs, playing with puppies, feeding goats, and enjoying home-cooked meals. Her unwavering support for them was evident as she attended every school event, sporting activity, and birthday celebration. No one was too old for a birthday cake and candles, and Fern ensured that no celebration was ever missed.

Fern is survived by her loving husband, Leo Thompson of Colorado City; her daughter, Jana Edmonds, and son-in-law, Scott Edmonds of Loraine; and her grandchildren, Carson Edmonds and his wife, Silvia Edmonds of Manor, Tx, and Madison Hammond and her husband, Casey Hammond of Richmond, Tx. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Smith, and his wife, Peggy Smith of Colorado City, sister-in-law Phyllis Smith, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

A visitation will be held on September 6, 2024, from 5pm-7pm at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home (338 Locust St.) in Colorado City. A private memorial service, graciously hosted by Donald and Peggy Smith, will take place on September 7, 2024.
