Walter graduated from Riverside High School, in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from High School, Walter joined the United States Navy. He was soon off to San Diego, California for Bootcamp, and then spent four years serving during the Korean War as an Air Traffic Controller. After returning home to Fort Worth from the Navy, Walter went to work for Texas & Pacific Railroad (now Union Pacific) in 1953, as a Carman. He worked for the railroad for forty years, retiring in October of 1993 at 62 years of age to become a “stay at home Grandpa!” Walter was blessed to spend just shy of thirty years retired and being the BEST “stay at home” Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa that a family could ever ask for!
Walter met the one true love of his life, Mary Ellen Lain on a blind date in 1957, set up by his lifelong friend Foy Shazer. Walter and Mary soon married on March 15th, 1958. They were blessed with many happy years of marriage, which would have been 65 years upcoming on March 15th, 2023.
Walter was a Mason and a Shriner for sixty years. Walter spent many years of his life umpiring and coaching softball, hunting, fishing, and playing a round of golf when he could. Walter had a real passion for his family, he loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and all his extended family. Walter also loved his church family and partaking in a fun filled game of Forty-Two.
