Shirley Jean Showers was born in Winfield Kansas on August 26, 1927 and passed on May 22, 2015 in a memory care facility in Grapevine, Texas with her family and her hospice nurses at her side. There will be a celebration of life at Whites Chapel UMC in the Founder’s Chapel on Thursday, May 28th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Shirley grew up in Wellington, Kansas, and married Harold I Knight, also of Wellington, in 1946. After a short time in Connecticut and then Dallas, they settled on Highland Street in Southlake and raised their family there.
Shirley was a homemaker. She could sew anything. She was an artist. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley was quiet and private but you could see her faith in the ripples of kindness she created that touched lives; kindnesses done with no intent but to bless and care for those she saw who had a need. Shirley’s kindnesses where the special ones that would come just at the right time when someone was in need.
Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007 and given a poor prognosis and less than a year to live. They didn’t know Shirley, the incredibly tough and stoic daughter of a Pennsylvania Dutch father.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Harold I Knight; parents, Harold A. and Hazel Showers; brothers, Harold Showers Jr. and Kenneth Showers. Her children, Chuck Knight of New Mexico, Robert Knight of Florida, and Linda Knight Behrends of Southlake survive her, along with four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Envoy Hospice for their incredible care and support these past years and also extends thanks to the direct care staff of Dancing River for their help. Many thanks go to Whites Chapel UMC for their prayers and continued encouragement. So many people have helped make a tapestry of care around Shirley and we are so very grateful and incredibly blessed.
