Marie Barrett Teis

Marie Barrett Teis, age 102 (but don’t tell her we told you her age), peacefully passed away, with family at her bedside, on November 7th at Bishop Davies Nursing Center, in Hurst, TX. Marie was born in Lookeba, Oklahoma. At an early age, she moved with her parents to Watonga, Oklahoma. She graduated from Watonga High School and was chosen as Football Queen. Marie attended Oklahoma College for Women for two years, and excelled in horsemanship; she was also president of her sorority. The following two years, Marie attended Oklahoma University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and met her future husband, Donald R Teis, in Geology class. Marie was very active in the Episcopal church, where she served as lay reader, chalice bearer, and served on several boards. She also served on the board of directors of Watonga State Bank. Marie enjoyed gardening and painting, and she loved her family and her pets. Her personality and quick wit were endearing to her family and all who knew her throughout her life. Marie is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Barrett and Olive Bovey Barrett; her sister, Ruth (CD) Wheatley; her brother, Jack Barrett; her husband, Donald R Teis, and her son, Lawrence Teis. She is survived by her daughter; Donna Marie Teis (Lawrence Housey); grandchildren, Cheryl (James) Beesley, Don (Terri) Rogers, Donny (Krista) Teis, Suzy (Jon) Edmonson, Cindy (Frank) Collier, Larry (Jana) Teis, and David (Jodi) Teis, as well as 14 great grandchildren, their spouses, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Marie is also survived by her sister-in-law, Bebe Barrett, as well as nieces and nephews, Patty Wheatley Fuller, Janice (Michael) Galloway, Suzanne Wheatley, Diane Barrett, Judy (Bob) Felder, and Randy (Susan) Barrett. Marie’s memorial service will be held at St. Martin in the Field’s Episcopal Church, 223 S. Pearson Ln., Keller, TX, on Sunday, November 19, at 4:00 pm. Marie writes this final farewell, “’Do not grieve, or look askance. I’ve sung my song and danced my dance.’ It was great. To my grandchildren, always remember Grandad’s admonitions.” Grandad’s admonitions were wise and funny. We love and miss you both.
