Marie was born at her family's farmhouse in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, on October 19, 1928, to John Bert Battle and Velma Cymera Sumner Battle. She married her high school sweetheart, John Harrison Holt, Jr., on January 20, 1949, in Washington D.C., where they both worked for the FBI after his return from serving in the European Theater with the U.S. Army during World War II, and after they both graduated from Lawrence County High School in 1947.
In 1955, Marie and John moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where Marie worked as a secretary in a law firm to support her husband as he pursued a college degree from the University of Tennessee. In 1958, Marie became a full-time mother and homemaker (and eventually a Mimi), roles she cherished enormously. In the early 1980’s she worked for a short time as a library clerk at the North Richland Hills Public Library. Marie and John moved to North Richland Hills, Texas, in 1969, from Nashville, Tennessee, when John’s job transferred them there. Marie and John joined North Richland Hills Baptist Church where for many years she taught a second grade Sunday School class, sang in the choir, and supported her husband as a deacon’s wife. She also loved to read, cook, work in her flower gardens, and conduct genealogy research, often dragging John to cemeteries all over their native Tennessee after he retired.
Marie loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her family wholeheartedly. She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, and her older brother, J.B. Battle and his wife, Anna Martha. She is survived by her daughters Rebecca Shuffield (Wayne), Martha Carr (Mark), and Sarah Reinmiller (Tom); grandchildren Amy Brown (Jeffrey); Andrew, Caleb, Luke (Lindsey), Nicolas (Melody) Carr, and Haleigh Winters (Jackson); Hannah, Samuel (Katelyn), Joseph (Rebecca), John, and David Reinmiller; three great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters; brother James Battle (Carol) and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family wishes to thank the administration and staff at MidTowne Assisted Living as well as the Heart to Heart Hospice organization for the care given to Marie. Should friends decide to give memorials, please consider giving to the Gideons International or Cornerstone Assistance Network, a ministry of North Richland Hills Baptist Church. Marie’s sweet smile and gentle spirit will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her celebration of life service will be held on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Arlington Community Church, Arlington, TX.
